Major Earthquake Strikes Japan

By Douglas V. Gibbs

An originally thought to be a magnitude 7.3 quake, later down-graded to 6.9, struck south of Japan in the Pacific Ocean, 52 miles east of Naha, on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.

The quake, only 6.2 miles below the seabed, was large enough to trigger at least one tsunami in nearby areas.
