Flooding In New England

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Flooding on the scale New England is seeing right now is rare. Hundreds of people have been driven from their homes and businesses. The storm has overwhelmed flood control systems, and has washed out bridges.

The record breaking rains have lasted for three days, leaving behind flood waters that have not been this bad in over 200 years. These rains complete a month's worth of record rainfall, being called by many as being the worst rainfall and flooding in the area's history.

The question is, will the people of the area act like the people of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and stand with their hands out in hopes for a federal salvation plan? Or will they act like the folks along the Mississippi Coast after Katrina, and act in a responsible manner as they take individual actions to repair the damage, and rebuild their communities?
